How to Easily Dual Boot Windows 7 and Windows 8
First Create the VHD (Virtual Hard Drive) at the first place. So, in order to create VHD, you need to go to the run box by simply pressing the combination of Windows key + R and then type diskmgmt.msc in the run box.
You will see the MMC console, and also have the pre-loaded disk management option.
In order to create a brand new VHD, you need to click on the action button in the menu bar, and then choose the option to create VHD.
Now, you have to select the location and set the size on behalf of VHD. It is recommended that the size shouldn’t be less than 20GB or so. In order to have best performance, you need to select a fixed size.
Now, windows will start the creation of VHD, you can view the progress in the main status bar of MMC.
Once you have created the VHD, you can see the same in the list of your hard disk partitions, as it will be appearing in the disk management console. You can initialize by simply clicking on it.
You can clock on Ok button and leave the partition at master boot record.
Once the disk has given a partition look, you can now easily create a real volume on the disk partition. In order to do this, you need to right click on the black space and then choose the option new simple volume.
A new wizard will be open; you need to accept all the default values until or unless you reached to below screen. At this stage, you need to change the volume label to windows 8 and then need to clock on the next button and then finish.
Now you have your new VHD that will work like a real hard disk drive.
Now you can install the windows 8 on the VHD. At the first place, you need to open the power shell using the administrator rights by opening the Start Menu->All Programs->Accessories->Windows Powershell, right-clicking on the Windows PowerShell shortcut, and then selecting or choosing Run as Administrator.
When the power shell has been launched, you need to amend the execution policy in order to allow running scripts. So, to do this, you require typing “Set-Execution Policy RemoteSigned”. You will be notify a security check then type Y and then press the enter key to accept the same. Once you have completed this, you can leave the power shell window in order to open that you will be using it just right now.
Now you require downloading the script from MSDN, then you need to move further to the root of drive C. Next you need to download this script from MSDN and then move it to the root of the C: Drive.
Now, simply right click on the file and then select its properties.
Furthermore, you need to mount the .ISO, as you have downloaded the said file from the windows developers’ website. Once you have done with mounting of.ISO image, you need to switch back to the Power Shell window. At there, you need to type “CD C:\” in order to switch to the root.
Then you need type the following command right into the shell window.
.\Install-WindowsImage.ps1 –WIM D:\Sources\Install.wim –Apply –Index 1 –Destination I:\
Now you have to substitute the drive letter that comes right after the WIM for the drive of the mounted image of the DVD, and the substitute the drive letter of the destination. Then simply click on the enter button.
You will be rightly notified, once the process has been completed.
You need to open the elevated command promoted, and then type the bcdboot.exe.
After rebooting the system, you will see the new operating system selecting screen.
The important thing you definitely want to do is to create you files available on both OS. You can navigate through the following path in order to boot right into the windows 8 installation.
C:\Users\[Your User Name]
After that you need to right click on the main contacts folder and then choose the properties from the main context menu. Just switch over to the main location tab and then press the move button.
Now just navigate to the drive of windows 7 Contacts folder. Though, the user name might be not the same that you used in the windows 8.
