In order to enable safe mode, you have to open up the command prompt window at the first place. There are few simple ways you can open up the command prompt window. Firstly, you can use the Metro screen user interface, or the windows 7 start menu option, or you can use windows explorer to search the file or you can say command “cmd.exe” for you.

In order to utilize the metro screen user interface in windows 8, you need to open the desktop by using metro start screen. Then move your mouse pointer over the start icon, then after choosing or select the search from the start menu in order to open up the search pane for you.  Same has been shown in the below screen shot.

Now you can scroll down through the list on the right side, and then select the Apps. After that hit “cmd”, so as you are typing, at the left side of the screen you will see the results. Then right click on “cmd” in the results shown in the left side of the screen.

You can see a check mark displays next to the “cmd.exe” and then an advanced icon displays in the lower, right corner of your windows 8 screen. You have to click on the advance icon and select the option run as administrator from the popup menu.

NOTE: if you cannot find “cmd.exe” by using the metro UI in safe mode. There is another way to find these programs by simply using windows explorer or search in the main windows directory, C:\windows directory.

You need to click on Yes, in case of the user account control dialog box displays.

Now, at the command prompt, you need to enter the following command and then press the enter key.

“bcdedit /enum /v” ( same has been highlighted in red in the circle in below screen shot)

Now, you have to enter the following command at the command prompt, but with a space at the end of command. Also, do not press Enter key yet.

“bcdedit /copy”

This has become the part of the command. In order to add to the command, you are required to copy the identifier for the windows 8 boot load with having the description, “windows developer preview”. In order to do this, you need to right click on the window and then choose mark from the main popup menu. I have shown the same in the below screen shot.

Press the enter key to copy it by simply highlighting the identifier, also include the brackets. Same has been highlighted red in the circle in below screen shot for your convenience.

Now, you need to right click on the window and select or choose paste from the main popup menu.

You need to type a space after the identifier pasted and also finish the command with typing the following command.

/d “Windows 8 Developer Preview (Safe Mode)”, in order to execute the command successfully, you need to press the enter key from your keyboard. The screen shot suggesting the whole procedure and command.

Now, simply close the command prompt window by just clicking the X close sign in the upper, right corner of your window. Same has been shown in the below screen shot.

Now open up the msconfig.exe, the same process will be adopted the way you have opened up cmd.exe.  Now you do not required to run it as an administrator.

Note: you can search msconfig.exe by simply using windows 7 style menu in order to run that command. Screen shot suggesting the same.

Now, in order to get to the safe mode, you need to select the windows 8 developer preview (safe mode) in the list and then you need to further select the safe boot check box. But you do not need to select the default minimal option right below the check box. Upon rebooting of system, the safe mode will be automatically started. Same has been shown in the below screen shot.

The following dialog box displays asking if you want to restart. Click Restart to reboot your computer immediately.

Sometimes, Safe Mode may not automatically start. Instead, you may see the following screen display when the computer restarts. Select the Windows 8 Developer Preview (Safe Mode) option to start in Safe Mode.

Now, the windows 8 will boot directly into the desktop view rather booting up in to metro user interface screen view. However, the windows help and support windows will always display, as it is providing the information about the safe mode.

In order to delete the safe mode boot option, you need to open cmd.exe as an administrator.

Then enter the following command at the command prompt, adding a space at the end. But do not press Enter key. “bcdedit /delete”

In order to copy the identifier for the windows boot loader section, you need to follow the same procedure as mentioned above. “Windows 8 Developer Preview (Safe Mode)” and paste the same into the above command. Then simply press the Enter key in order to execute the command. You should be prompted with a message that the operation has been completed successfully. Same has been shown in the below screen shot.

Also, you can simply turn off the Safe Mode by just unchecking the Safe boot check box on behalf of Windows 8 Developer Preview (Safe Mode) option in the msconfig.exe, and then you need to reboot the system.

Damn…I am exhausted just reading those procedures, I can only imagine going through all of those I would need to be hospitalized.

Guess I won’t be using Safe Mode in Windows 8 if I decide to get it. I am very pleased with Windows 7.
